DLP vs. LCD vs. Plasma

What you should know about the new TV Technologies

DLP

DLP (or Digital Light Projection) is a digital technology developed by Texas Instruments. It uses tens of thousands of tiny mirrors mounted on a chipset to reflect light through a spinning color wheel to produce outstanding high definition images. The number of micro-mirrors on the chip determines the resolution of the image. DLP creates deeper blacks, convey fast moving images very well, and use a single replaceable white light bulb. DLP technology is available in both front and rear projection models. DLP is an excellent choice for people that watch a lot of sports or fast-action movies because of the speed at which it creates an image.

LCD

LCD (or Liquid Crystal Display) is a technology that utilizes liquid crystal sandwiched between two panels. Electricity is sent through the panel and the crystals line up to create images. LCD is known for its bright display that has exceptionally true colors. The picture is very stable and easy to watch. LCD is available in flat panel, rear projection, and front projection displays. The speed of the refresh rate, or how fast it can create an image, is constantly increasing, rivaling that of plasma and DLP. LCD does a great job with both film and video sources. Its natural look and bright true colors make for a great viewing experience.

Plasma

Plasma technology uses a mixture of inert gases charged with an electric current to create an image. Because of its flat, space-saving design, plasma has seen explosive growth in the last several years. Its bright vibrant colors and wide viewing angle make it a terrific choice as a high-definition display. Plasmas range in size from 37” to 65”. Plasmas are available in both Enhanced Definition (EDTV) up to 480 progressive lines of resolution and High Definition (HDTV) at least 720 progressive lines of resolution. You may also choose to get integrated plasma (a tv with both speakers and a tuner) or a monitor only which would need an external tuner (cable box or satellite receiver) and an external sound system.
